How to Sell a Personalized License Plate
Selling a personalized license plate starts with confirming what your state allows, documenting the plate, choosing an asking price, and finding a buyer. VPX is designed to keep that process simple while keeping offers, documents, and transaction steps private.
The VPX seller process
- 1. Upload a plate photo. Use a clear, recent photo of the actual personalized plate.
- 2. Enter plate information. Add the plate text, state, asking price, and an optional description.
- 3. Upload registration. Registration documentation is handled privately for VPX review and is not displayed publicly.
- 4. Review the listing. Confirm the plate, state, price, photo, and description before submission.
- 5. Submit for VPX review. Submission does not automatically make the listing live or guarantee a sale.
What happens when a buyer is interested?
Buyers can make private offers on eligible live listings. A seller can accept, counter, or decline. VPX does not use public bidding, and an offer does not by itself complete a sale or government transfer.
How payment and transfer coordination work
After buyer and seller agree on a price and the transaction is eligible, the buyer can pay through a private VPX checkout. VPX then helps coordinate the next steps and provides state-specific transfer guidance. The applicable government agency decides whether the personalized plate can ultimately transfer or be issued.
How much does it cost to list?
Creating and publishing an approved VPX listing is free. Review the current fees and payments page for the service fee that applies to eligible completed transactions.
