Nevada Personalized License Plate Transfer Guide
Nevada is one of the clearest states for person-to-person plate-number releases. Nevada DMV states that an owner who wants another person to use an existing set of plates must complete a License Plate Release, Form SP 67, as part of the DMV registration process.
What the official sources say
Nevada DMV says license plates are issued to people and businesses rather than vehicles. Personalized plates can be moved between vehicles owned by the same person, subject to registration requirements.
For a transfer to another person, Nevada DMV specifically directs the current owner to sign a License Plate Release (SP 67). The release occurs through the DMV while the new owner is registering the vehicle or during a formal plate swap. Registration credits do not transfer with the plates.
For the seller
- Confirm the personalized plate is registered to you in Nevada.
- Review and complete the current Nevada DMV SP 67 License Plate Release when the transaction is ready for the government step.
- Coordinate the release with the buyer's DMV registration rather than treating a private payment as the legal transfer.
- Retain transaction and DMV records after the release is completed.
For the buyer
- Confirm the exact Nevada plate number and plate type before making an offer.
- Confirm the seller is prepared to sign SP 67.
- Complete your Nevada registration requirements with DMV or the appropriate county office.
- Do not treat the number as assigned to you until Nevada DMV completes the registration and plate-release process.
