Texas Personalized License Plate Transfer Guide
Texas requires extra caution because the official TxDMV guidance we reviewed focuses on a plate owner retaining or moving plates to another vehicle they own. VPX does not assume that a personalized Texas plate can be sold and reassigned directly to an unrelated buyer without TxDMV or county approval.
What the official sources say
TxDMV says personalized messages must be approved by the department and that specialty and personalized plates are associated with registration requirements. When a vehicle is sold, a seller may remove the plates and keep them for future transfer to another vehicle titled in the seller's name.
TxDMV's current public guidance does not provide a general peer-to-peer process that lets an unrelated buyer automatically acquire the seller's personalized plate rights through a private sale. For that reason, buyers and sellers should confirm the exact path with TxDMV or the county tax assessor-collector before money or release obligations become final.
For the seller
- Confirm the personalized plate is currently registered to you.
- Do not promise that the plate number itself can be reassigned to an unrelated buyer unless TxDMV or the county confirms the process for the specific plate type.
- Retain the plate after a vehicle sale unless the agency directs otherwise.
- Use the VPX transaction only in a way that is consistent with the government-approved process.
For the buyer
- Confirm the exact plate configuration and specialty plate type.
- Before relying on the seller's plate rights, contact the applicable county tax assessor-collector or TxDMV to confirm whether and how the configuration can be issued to you.
- Do not assume possession of the metal plate equals ownership of the personalized configuration.
- Complete all title, registration, fee, and approval requirements before treating the plate as successfully assigned.
